Moenkopi Developers Corporation
The Upper Village of Moenkopi created Moenkopi Developers Corporation, Inc. (MDC), a 501(c)(3) non-profit economic development enterprise with the mission to create jobs for the Hopi people, establish entrepreneurship opportunities, and create revenue for the Upper Moenkopi Village to enhance social, education, health and safety services to its residents. The Moenkopi Master Plan for 72 acres of land at the junction of Highways 160 and 264 includes low income housing, neighborhood retail space, a grocery store, an office complex, community center, farmer’s market, a cinema, and a BIA police substation and fire facility. Employment for the full complex is projected at over 350 local residents.

Rural Community Innovations is a non-profit economic development corporation founded in 1996 to provide technical assistance to a wide variety of rural communities and businesses. RCI has worked with dozens of Native American communities, organizations, and tribes on a variety of community and economic development projects, including private sector job creation and alternative energy. RCI applies concerted effort to assist rural communities improve community vibrancy and the wellbeing of their people. In order to aid sustainable growth and increase employment they support technologically advanced, cost-competitive, and environmentally sensitive solutions that improve self-sufficiency in business, tourism, and energy. RCI was involved in securing all grants and financing for economic development in Moenkopi.

The Department of Housing and Urban Development’s (HUD) policy is to promote tribal economies through homeownership.  HUD’s Southwest Office of Native American Programs (SWONAP) ensures that safe, decent and affordable housing is available to Native American families, creates economic opportunities for Tribes and Indian housing residents, assists Tribes in the formulation of plans and strategies for community development, and assures fiscal integrity in the operation of the programs.

Northeast Arizona Sustainability Consortium is a collaboration between the tribes, cities, and towns of Northeast Arizona to develop a 20-year Regional Plan for Sustainable Development focused upon job creation, transportation options, affordable housing, and sound environmental principles.

 

The Moenkopi Developers Corporation (MDC) has assumed a leadership role on behalf of the Hopi Tribe to develop a strategic plan utilizing an approach developed by Building Communities, a company specializing in Rural Sustainability Planning.

 

The MDC plan will be the first of many completed for the region, and focused upon eight distinct strategies to create jobs and improve the overall quality of life: Destination Tourism, Cultural Tourism, Local/Regional Tourism, Pass-through Visitor Services, Attracting Government Funding, Energy Development, Entrepreneurial Development, and Sustainability-Focused Development.

The Moenkopi Legacy Inn & Suites is the first hotel built on Hopi land in 50 years. The hotel is designed to reflect the art and culture of the Hopi people in its architecture and interior décor. The hotel has 100 guestrooms including 16 suites, an outdoor pool, a fitness center, and business center. The hotel Conference Center has over 3,000 square feet of meeting space and can accommodate groups up to 250 people.
